Ninpo Taijutsu Training

法帖 体術 研修

At this beginning level you will learn an overview of all the Ninja schools and their weapons to prepare you for the deeper study of Budo Taijutsu 武道体術 and all the schools wazas and principles.

Ninpo Taijutsu training from 9th kyu to Shodan you learn a strategic systematized overview of the Ninjutsu schools including foundations, postures, punches, kicks, weapon basics, history, stealth, chokes, grappling, throws, meditation, proper body movement and much, much more. Hundreds and hundreds of techniques. On the average the student spend appox 3 years of solid training on this level as it covers main aspects of Bujinkan, Togakure Ryu, Gyokko Ryu, Koto Ryu, Kukishinden Ryu, Shinden Fudo Ryu, Takagi Yoshin Ryu preparing you for a deeper focus of each individual schools that you will study at succeeding Dan levels.

Budo Taijutsu Training

武道体術 研修

After learning a very solid overview of the traditions that make up the teachings of Ninjutsu 忍術 (the art of the Ninja) you will begin to explore the actual school's (known as Ryu) material in a more in-depth-way by studying the deeper principles and partner exchange forms called waza. Unlike a Kata which is performed by oneself to perfection. Wazas are interactive drills that are done with at least 2 persons both in a formal way and with many variations so that the principles of the school can also be learned. Wazas also help you learn timing, distancing, and eventually true budo protection methods. Each of the 9 schools have their own focuses and attributes and may favor certain weapons.

Skills of the Japanese Ninja

日本 忍者 スキル

The Ninja was taught from an early age, typically 6 or 7 and would begin with basic conditioning and endurance training. Philosophy was also taught. Taking the example of the Togakure Ryu Ninjutsu, a ninja would first learn 18 basic skills, the Bugei Juhappan, then 18 more advanced skills, the Ninja Juhakken. Here is a catalogue of the Togakure ryu's Ninpo Juhakken:

Seishin Teki Kyoyo - Spiritual Refinement

Tai-Jutsu - Unarmed Combat

Ninjatou-Jutsu - Ninja Short Sword Techniques

Bo-Jutsu - Staff Techniques (includes Jo, Hanbo, Shinobizue)

Shuriken-Jutsu - Throwing blade Techniques

Yari-Jutsu - Spear Techniques

Naginata-Jutsu - Halberd Techniques (Naginata and Bisentou)

Kusarigama-Jutsu - Sickle-and-chain Techniques (Kusarigama, Kyoketsu Shoge, Mammukigama etc.)

Henso-Jutsu - Disguise

Shinobi-Iri - Stealth and silent Entry Techniques

Ba-Jutsu - Horsemanship

Sui-Ren - Swimming and water Techniques

Bo-Ryaku - Strategy

Cho-Ho - Espionage (textbook study)

Inton-Jutsu - Disappearing techniques

Ten-Mon - Meteorology

Chi-Mon - Geography

*There is one Ryu that the Bujinkan system does not teach, but ONKD does and that is,

Fukiya - Blowgun

The Fukiya is a Japanese blowgun. It is a ranged weapon that can be used by the Ninja with the proper amount of skill. A minimum of 50 is required. Hit chance success is related to Ninjitsu skill level. It is a One-Handed Weapon for anyone with the requisite skill, however, Grandmaster Ninjas can use them while equipped with a two-handed weapon.

Spiritual refinement was necessary to make sure the Ninja was in control of his own mind. He was geared towards thinking of his own purpose, and morality. Since a ninja was freely fading in and out of truth and falsehood, he had to make sure he knew who he was, or else what purpose would there be to his life or his mission?

Taijutsu formed the core of the ninja’s defence techniques; A strong grounding in Taijutsu made it easy for the ninja to adapt to the many weapons he would have to master. Once a ninja had been learning Taijutsu for a while he would progress to weapons training. A ninja did not master one or two weapons, but out of necessity would need to master every weapon he could conceivably encounter. The reasons for this are twofold. Firstly, experience with a weapon helps to build a sense of its movement, distancing and application, thus allowing a ninja specialised in xyz to be proficient in defending against xyz. Secondly, since every weapon has strengths and weaknesses, it would be a foolish mistake to master a single weapon since if the knowledge of this got out, potential enemies would be able to prepare counter-defences against this preferred weapon, and so the ninja would lose his advantage of surprise.

TRAINING SESSION

トレーニングセッション

A training session lasts for "approx" one hour-and-a-half and more often than not begins with a warm up. Most people who train will arrive at the Dojo 15 min early, change into a Gi, which is a white/black training suit and then go into the dojo to warm themselves up. When everyone has arrived the class will start.

Mostly in a warm up we practice stretching, rolling and breakfalling, moving on to doing this with wooden training swords (Bokken) and other training tools as people progress. The basics of Sanshin and Kihon Happo are also used to warm up ready for the class.

The classes very on what is being shown at the time, sometimes we practice unarmed techniques and at others we may practice with wooden training weapons. A movement or principle will be shown and explained and the group will pair up with a partner and practice. Nobody is expected to get the movements or principles the first time they do them and nobody will laugh at you if you don’t get things right. Everyone who trains is a student and all know how frustrating it can be to see something, and not be able to do, what on the surface seems to be a simple movement.

Sometimes a number of things will be shown and then be practiced. At other times however one technique or Kata will be worked on all class, this depends how the movement or principle is understood by those practicing it .

Most people who try the Bujinkan system find it wealth of techniques and it adaptability to different situations (within life as well as the Dojo) a benefit to their life. Yes, you will learn how to wrist lock or throw and opponent and how to pin them to the floor to protect your loved ones and yourself. Yes you will learn how to use Sticks, knives and swords along with other tools of the training, to be able to adapt everyday objects to help protect yourself in a violent encounter. More than this you will be better equipped to read the atmosphere and be able to protect yourself and others, by understanding that the training is far more than just physical combat and that self defence does not begin at the moment someone decides to attack you.
